October 2 2023: A Cruise robotaxi in San Francisco hit a pedestrian who had already been struck by a human-driven car and thrown into the Cruise vehicle's path. Instead of stopping, the Cruise AV executed a 'pullover maneuver' — dragging the pinned woman approximately 20 feet at 7 mph. Cruise showed the DMV edited video omitting the dragging. California DMV revoked Cruise's driverless permit October 24. The Hammer & Quinn report (January 2024) found Cruise 'misled regulators.' CEO Kyle Vogt resigned November 19. GM announced June 2024 it would stop funding Cruise, cutting 50% of staff. DOJ fined Cruise $500K and the NHTSA imposed a $1.5M civil penalty. One of the most spectacular AV implosions to date.
