At Config 2024 in late June, Figma debuted 'Make Designs' — an AI feature that generates UI mockups from text prompts. Developer Andy Allen tested it by asking for a weather app. The output was nearly identical to Apple's iOS Weather app: same layout, same typography, same gradient, same icons. Within hours, X had 50+ side-by-side comparisons of Figma generating pixel-perfect clones of Spotify, Airbnb, Headspace, and Notion. Figma's CEO Dylan Field announced within 24 hours that Make Designs would be disabled until 'we can do it safely'. The incident became the canonical example of AI models overfitting to specific popular designs.
