In February 2024, Elon Musk — an OpenAI co-founder who left its board in 2018 — filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, Sam Altman, and Greg Brockman. He alleged that OpenAI had violated its founding charter by abandoning its nonprofit, open-source mission to share AI safely with humanity and instead becoming a de-facto subsidiary of Microsoft focused on profit. The lawsuit was later dropped and re-filed. It exposed the internal founding documents and debates about AGI that had previously been secret.
